 Murli Prasad Sharma, aka Munna Bhai, is a gangster in Mumbai who pretends to be a doctor to make his father, Hari Prasad, proud. His father, unaware of Munna's true identity, believes he is a respected doctor in Mumbai. When Munna's parents visit him, he goes to great lengths to keep up the charade, even setting up a fake clinic.

However, when a real doctor, Dr. Asthana, exposes Munna’s deception, Munna's father is heartbroken. To win back his father's respect and fulfill his wish, Munna decides to pursue a medical degree legitimately. With determination and his own brand of "gandhigiri" (non-violence and compassion), he gets admission to a medical college run by none other than Dr. Asthana.

In the college, Munna's unconventional methods—based on empathy, kindness, and humor—make him beloved among patients but get him into frequent clashes with Dr. Asthana. Munna eventually teaches everyone, including Dr. Asthana, that a compassionate heart can sometimes be the best medicine.

The film is a blend of humor, emotion, and social messages, emphasizing the importance of empathy in medicine and everyday life. It also became the beginning of the popular "Munna Bhai" series, followed by the sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
